PFSense Home Firewall Made in China

In a recent article on SSL security, we noted that SSL was compromised with a PFSense home firewall made in China. SSL and PFSense are two totally different products from different manufacturers, but both are increasingly popular.

In the same way that a PFSense home firewall made in China can be used to compromise SSL security, the same can be said for other PKI systems such as CSA-based web servers. This is unfortunate because of the sheer scale of SSL, which is used in most systems. This scale is vital for keeping your networks secure and able to send encrypted data.

The same is true for PFSense home firewalls. There are a few things you can do in order to provide your system with a greater level of security by ensuring it is located where it is kept. Some of these include;

Unless you are working with PFSense home firewalls made in China, then you should be looking at the "two-step verification" option. This is the option which requires a user to enter two bits of information before they can log into their account. In this process, the first bit is an eight character alphanumeric code and the second bit is an eight character alphanumeric code.

At the very least, you should have physical access to the hardware where the systems are kept and set a password on it. Although it is possible to implement this, you may not have the time or the know-how to be able to accomplish this. By having physical access to the hardware, you also have physical access to the door to the data center!

You also need to make sure that you are configuring the hardware at all times as well as any software you use. For example, if you want to install software on a device that is not always a direct port, then the software may be inaccessible without the hardware.

Then, of course, the hardware and software have to be configured as you configure them, even if you do not have a clue what the actual configuration is. This means that you also need to configure everything including software and hardware, if necessary.

Most PFSense home firewall is configured as regular services, meaning that they only run when they are needed. If you cannot use this, then you need to consider changing the software and the hardware. Changing hardware and software may be difficult and costly, so there are better options that do not require you to spend time and money configuring the PFSense home firewall.
